denotation and connotation

1) Write an analysis of the WaterAid advert above using denotation, connotation and analysis. What can you see? What are the deeper meanings in the advert? What does the advert communicate to the audience? How might an audience react after seeing the advert?

denotations: we can see is that there is a young black boy. we can see the companies name and we can see that there is a village behind the young boy. and we can see that there is typography "dig toilets not graves". we can see technical codes such as the mud wall and the village behind him. we can also see that he is carrying something on his back.

connotation: we can imply that he lives in a village (technical codes) the typography indirectly tells us that people are dying making us feel empathetic towards them also this displays propaganda this is a symbolic and non verbal code we can also see that he has noticeable frown on his face which leads us to the fact that he might be upset. this is also a technical code. the company name leads us to believe that they give water aid.

in this advert we can see that it is very colourful. the popcorn everywhere is suggesting that it is a denotation: celebration and the baseball bat also suggest that as well. there is also some popcorns in a bowl which is showing us how the popcorn looks. 

connotation: 

 look nice so they can get more customers. we can see from the colour red that it is sort of a celebration . from the packet w can clearly see that the packet and the ball is flying which is making the whole advert of the popcorn seem exciting and fun for customers to look at. also we can see that the handle of the bat is matching with the whole colour scheme of the popcorn wrapper and the background of the whole advert
